I have an IQ-X, a Supernova E3-Pro 2 and now the new M99 DY Pro but would love to see why this one is better than those. Beam pattern is the most important thing for me on most of my lights the bike with the E3 which is used more off road would be a good potential candidate for this light but am curious why they would be so different and what is good and bad about each. Obviously MUSA is cool and I have their headset charger so I am sold on the brand already but curious what sets this apart from the other dynamo lights.

Hi Jim, thanks for reading!

That’s a good question. When you “free spin” the front wheel in your hands, or while the bike is in the work stand, it seems like there would be a lot of drag. I was nervous about that when I first tried a dynamo hub. There is a bit of difference between the three different hubs I’m currently using when you “free spin” them, with the SON spinning the longest, but only marginally. If you aren’t racing or counting minutes, the drag is nominal and completely unnoticeable when riding.

This article is very helpful, it helped me when I was diving into the dynamo world.

I hope that helped a bit.

~$500 is a large outlay for most cyclists, when a modern rechargeable lights for a fraction of the price can provide the same or better illumination (with batteries included). It’s also easy to carry small backup lights.

The Spurcycle bell is similar, in costing x10 a serviceable bell, or a SS King cage, BUT $50 is so much easier to stomach.

I like to go on Travel & Leisure magazine and tell ‘em they’re wasting money on some fancy-pants holiday in French Polynesia when a state park beach in New Jersey has sand and salt water too.

I used to build Wheels 8 hours a day so paying for the build of the wheel wouldn’t be an expense, but when all of the other expenses are added up, it sounds pretty insane to me. Financially Poor people like to cycle as well . But I still ride a bike with a Sun tour cyclone rear derailleur, on a proper frame, one on which the top tube is parallel to the ground.

Hi Steve, thanks for reading. The bracket that the rear light is mounted with is an integrated part of that rear light. Hope that helps.

I use one made by Framebuilder Supply but it requires that the wire run through a closed loop, which then requires untiring the whole bike if you ever want to move it.

I’m with you on the utility of always running a dynamo hub and light. Too many times I’ve had batteries die or found myself caught out in the dark when a ride went long. Love the peace of mind of knowing I always have light (and power).

What is the total system loss? For bike packing i went down the dynamo rabbit hole with a Shimano hub pared with a PDW light and it was an abject failure, an expensive one at that, barely 60 lumen. Good review too.
