While they started in skateboarding, Etnies shoes has been in the BMX scene since the 90’s, and later joined the MTB world by sponsoring slopestyle rulers Brandon Semenuk and Emil Johansson. Just this week, they’ve leapt into the clipless shoe game with their new Camber CL MTB shoe.
Designed for enduro and downhill MTB, the Camber CL aims to offer durability and protection in key areas while remaining lightweight and breathable. The shoes feature some of Etnies’ proven technologies built around a new-for-the-brand clipless construction.
The Camber CL’s uppers are made from a material called Exo-shield, which is light and breathable yet also durable. The uppers are also treated with a water-resistant Repel coating. The shoe’s asymmetric ‘Lace Lock’ lacing is designed to protect the laces from your pedals, and a Velcro Power Strap ensures a secure and easily adjustable fit. Reflective panels on the heels enhance your visibility when riding to and from the trailhead.
Inside the shoe Etnies uses their STI Evolution foam for the midsole, which provides plenty of cushioning (I’ve owned their skate shoes, they’re always super comfy) but resists packing out over time. They’ve also included a System Flo2 Compression tongue, which helps keep your feet from overheating and keeps dirt and debris from getting into the shoe. Pull tabs on the heel and tongue make it easier to get your foot into the sock-like compression tongue.
The Camber CL’s outsole is made from Formula G, a rubber compound that Etnies says is twice as sticky as standard rubber. The tread pattern was specifically designed to offer a pedal friendly mid-section, with grippy areas on the toe and heel for off-bike traction. Inside the Formula G sole is a Nylon pedal shank to provide support and pedalling efficiency.

The Camber CL MTB shoe is now available in most countries globally, but won’t make it to Europe until March. They are sold through select Etnies retailers and online for $185.99. The Camber CL comes in Black only, and sizes range from (US) men’s 5-14.
